Frivola
A truly unique novelty yarn! Another new knitting concept to try, this "yarn" is made up of soft pom-poms strung along a base cord. There is a tiny bit of shiny glitter to the pom-poms. And great colors too--brights and soft tones to choose from. It might be frivolous, but it sure is fun!
There are some delightful patterns from Trendsetter that use this yarn, primarily for scarves and other accessories. Frivola can be used alone, or with other nifty yarns like Cha Cha or Minestrone for a completely different look. The red scarf shown above takes just three skeins, the two color scarf only takes one of each color.
What a lot of fun for everyone--girls, tweens, teens and mom! There's a cute girl's "glamour stole" in one of the books, and all sorts of scarves and wraps. I can't help but think there have got to be other crafting uses for this yarn, too--costumes? fringes? embellishment on hats, mittens, bags, backpacks? So many possibilities. See the Trendsetter Pattern Books for Frivola!
How to knit Frivola
Frivola consists of pom-poms spread evenly over a base cord. The stitches are knit only in the cord spaces.
To cast on, skip the first 2 pom-poms and make a slip knot in the middle of the next open space, place on your left hand (LH) needle. Knit on a second stitch by inserting right hand (RH) needle into the stitch, yo, pull through and place on LH needle. Skip the pom-pom and continue in knitted cast on, making two stitches in each space.
This is the basic method. To have the pom-poms lined up vertically in rows, you need to have 1 stitch in the cord on each end, so that every row starts and ends with 1 cord stitch.
