Lopi Lite: Genuine 100% Pure Icelandic Lopi Wool Yarn from Reynolds and Istex Mills (Icelandic Textiles LTD)

DK Double knitting weight in 50 gram skeins

"The Icelandic Sweater, with it's characteristic circular yoke and patterned borders, has come to symbolize Iceland far beyond the Island's boundaries. Iceland is a country of hardy long-haired sheep, whose wool combines the qualities of softness, sturdiness, and water resistance. Icelandic woolens are the natural choice if you want to share the wonders of the unique country that created them."

From Iceland, this 100% pure wool has a tradition of quality, which began in 1896. Icelandic sheep have been bred for over 1,100 years, and isolation has ensured a pure breed whose wool provides unique protection from the harsh climate. Icelandic Wool is lighter, warmer, and more water-resistant than that found elsewhere. Lopi has so many beautiful colors! Also available in over 40 shades is Lopi Light, which is half the weight (DK). It is a perfect alternative for those who want the advantage of Lopi wool but prefer a lighter weight yarn.  It's great for colorwork on cardigans and ski sweaters. We also now have Bulky Lopi which is about twice the size of regular Lopi, just right for jackets and coats, and knits up fast.  Icelandic sheep fleece is double layered, and in the same way that the sheep are kept warm and dry, the wearers of Lopi can expect the same results. The wool of Icelandic sheep consists of two types of fibers, inner and outer. The inner layer of light fine fibers are soft and crinkly, insulating well against the cold, while the outer fibers are long and course and smooth - and as a result, water repellent. Moisture cannot penetrate, because it runs down the outer fibers. These fibers are irregular, and they create air spaces when that are loosely bound together. The two combined create a light but sturdy water resistant yarn.

These yarns are terrific for felting, too!
