Wraps Per Inch Measuring Kit
Our WPI Tool is a handy device for all fiber artists who want to measure their fiber's WPI. Increasingly, WPI is being used by designers and yarn manufacturers when specifying their designs or yarn characteristics. Two yarns that have the same WPI can be exchanged.* This is important if you are trying to substitute one yarn for another for a given pattern.

The WPI Tool Kit includes the WPI Tool and the WPI Knit-Kard which includes instructions on using the tool plus reference data for interpreting the WPI measurements. The tool is made from birch hardwood which has an oil finish, and measures 5" in length. All markings are laser etched into the wood and will not wear off. There are markings up to 3 inches which allows you to calculate a more accurate average WPI on certain hairy yarns, and also 1/2 inch marks. A special yarn guide knob is used to hold your yarn in place while measuring the WPI. The WPI Knit-Kard™ is included so you know how to use the tool and have a useful WPI chart for 6 different weights of yarn. A highly engineered wooden tool for knitters and spinners. *There are, of course, some yarn characteristics that cannot be accounted for using WPI. It is important to consider whether the fiber is appropriate for the pattern, considering its drape, hand, and physical weight. WPI is not a substitute for working a gauge swatch (rats!) or common sense (double rats!) but it can certainly narrow down the possibilities and help you when looking through your stash for an appropriate substitute yarn.
