Plötulopi Traditional Icelandic Wool

This is the un-spun single ply yarn that is the favorite of the native Icelandic knitters for garments of all kinds. Similar to pencil roving, it can be knitted with multiple strands held as one. Since Plötulopi is an unspun yarn, it is fragile to knit; however, due to the length of the fibers, it knits into a sweater that is both sturdy and soft. Breaks while knitting are easily patched back together with no harm done.

Two strands of Plötulopi is equivalent in gauge to Létt-Lopi, four strands is equivalent to Alafoss Lopi. You can also mix it directly with Einband or Létt-Lopi for more special effects. One of the most intriguing uses of this unspun wool is the mixing of colors to achieve new colors and degradé effects. This wool will most definitely open more creative doors for you.

This unique wool is sold by weight as a one-ply, flat roll, called a "plate". Each plate is 100 g (3.5 oz) plates with about 328 yards (300 m).

The gauge of course will vary depending on the number of plies used and the size of the needles used. Because of this it is imperative that you swatch this yarn in the manner in which you intend to use it. If you are knitting in the round, you should swatch in the round.

Gauge-1 ply: 19 sts to 10 cm (4") over St st using size 4˝ mm (US 7) needles.
Gauge-2 ply: 14 sts to 10 cm (4") over St st using size 5˝ mm (US 9).

5 of 5 All serious knitters MUST try this yarn April 4, 2019
Reviewer: Alexandra from North Carolina
I am an intermediate knitter doing mostly stranded colorwork. I was on the fence for a long time about attempting to work with unspun Icelandic yarn.  I was scared off by all the comments about how easily the yarn breaks.  I currently have 15 inches (using up one full plate of yarn) on my needles and have experienced only one yarn breakage.  I am amazed at how soft and light this yarn is - much nicer than lette lopi. I would highly encourage any knitter to take a chance with this yarn. I also love the fact that  you get so much yardage for the very affordable price. I cannot sing the praises of unseen enough. You will not be sorry you tried it.
