You are here: Home > Yarn > Yarns by Fiber > Alpaca Yarns and Blends
So many lovely pure Alpaca and Alpaca blend yarns, in weights from the finest lace weight up to quick knitting chunky.  Alpaca is naturally soft, hypoallergenic, and warm.  It can be spun like wool for fabulously squishy soft fabrics.  Alpaca can also be brushed as mohair often is with long fibers left to create a soft halo that blooms. In that case, the best yarns contain a small amount of a strong blending yarn such as nylon in order to minimize shedding.

Cassatt
by Universal Yarns
A new look in a luxury yarn, with playful dashes of color. Cassatt is a light and lofty blend of baby alpaca, wool, nylon, and viscose that is spun in Italy,. It is constructed with a hollow core, and fine fibers are blown through for an ethereal halo. It is named in honor of Mary Cassatt, the famous American impressionist who worked in Paris with Monet and Degas. The colors are inspired by their popular impressionist painting. Beautiful speckles and tweedy nubs make this yarn all the more magical. Let this yarn inspire your new favorite garments and accessories!

Novena
by Lang

Novena is an exceptionally appealing and light hand knitting yarn out of precious merino wool and glossy alpaca. Because of an innovative spinning technique, this yarn knits like a lightweight worsted, but the resulting garment is airy and very light to wear. Wonderful for fair isle knitting, because it knits up fast but isn't heavy. So soft, too!

As usual, the Lang colors are beautiful, and appealing, and completely current. This yarn lends itself to stitch patterning. There are many beautiful patterns for this yarn in all the Fall and Winter Fatto a Mano books.

  • 50% Merino, 30% Baby Alpaca, 20% Nylon
  • 22 stitches and 31 rows to 4"
  • US 6-8 needles (4-5 mm)
  • 25 gram ball is about 120 yards (110m)
  • Hand wash, dry flat, do not use fabric softener
  • Woman's medium (36") plain long sleeved pullover takes approximately 350 g (14 balls)
Alpaca SuperLight by Lang
You simply won't believe this super-soft, super-fine, super-luxurious, super-light alpaca yarn from Lang. This yarn has a light halo, yet is less transparent than most brushed yarns. No tickle or scratch like mohair, none of the itchiness you might expect with a feathery yarn.

This yarn really is super light--a dress takes only 175 grams in size small, and a medium long sleeve sweater is about 200 grams. That coat will float down the street with you--it's like wearing a warm alpaca cloud!

Perfect for lace scarves, shawls and stoles, but great for lighter-than-air sweaters too.

EcoPuna Baby Alpaca Special Black

Naturally black ("true black") alpacas are quite rare, and this accounts for the difference in price between this color and the other Eco Puna colors. Extra hand culling is required to remove stray non-black fibers and produce a solid black yarn without any dying. This black color is put up in 25g balls, but is otherwise the same spin and yardage. It is exceptionally soft.

With the black edition of Eco Puna, Amano aims to support the Andean communities in the breeding of alpacas with pure black fiber in an effort to re-establish this population, which has dropped dramatically, to the point that is accounts for only 0.03% of all alpaca fiber.

Eco Puna is the natural undyed version of Puna. Puna is the quintessential luxury yarn for larger projects and garments. It is 100% Baby alpaca in a DK weight suitable for your favorite patterns. The natural variations in the fiber produce a lovely heathery shade in every hue.

Baby Alpaca fiber has a diameter of 22.5 microns, which is equivalent to the upper limit of cashmere. This yarn has a very even 4ply spin, yielding a yarn approximately the same thickness as 8-ply, or DK weight yarn.

This yarn is a sumptuous choice for a larger garment or lace project. A size US 6 needle will produce a solid stockinette fabric that can be luxuriously worn next to the skin.

Aymara
by Lang

You have got to get Aymara into your hands. Period. Full Stop.
I LOVE this yarn, but gosh I hate trying to describe it, because it is so, so much more than words and pictures can convey. It is so much more than its parts. Simply out of this world. Here's what Lang says:

"When innovation and classic complement each other: Lang's Aymara consists of a special blend of fibers in a traditional three-thread twist. The yarn is spun from high quality, superfine Peruvian alpaca fibers, fine merino wool and lyocell fibers produced in a closed cycle.
Lyocell fibers are breathable and completely biodegradable."

Another addition to the Malou family of yarns: Malou Light! This yarn is truly exceptional. This chunky yarn is so airy, you won't believe the yardage in the 50g ball. Many of the same characteristics of regular super bulky Malou, it's light and so so squeezably soft, almost like unspun fiber. Fantastic!

Great to use for any basic pattern at 4st/in, this is a quick knit with a luxurious look and feel, and will be a staple in your wardrobe for years. Also, there are many attractive patterns for this yarn in the most recent Fall and Winter pattern books from Lang.
